Having worked in the storage industry for anumber of years, I have observed, every day in this business, is different. It is probably the main reason why I lovegetting up in the morning and toddling off to work. Let me share with you some of my tips andneed to know info that has helped me along the way.

Mental attitude – Once you open the door to your site, put on your Storage King Hat, try & leave behind any troubles, family or social distractions.
Check your “communications book” or diary daily to ensure you are up to date with any changes, events or scheduled activities that demand your attention. Be prepared and organised for the day. Doing this makes your daily duties so much easier to complete.
Check your emails; don’t forget your Junk Box. Important communication can be missed if you ignore to look in this folder.
Time Management/Prioritise – make sure you allow yourself enough time in the day to achieve what you have set out to do; work out what it is that you want to achieve for the day and how you can add value to your site.
Keep up to date with any changes. Make sure you are aware of any changes to forms, procedures & routines. My recommendation is to archive the form/procedure and only have the updated documents on file. Always replace printed copies if used with the latest version.
Always keep your keys on self, avoid putting down & forgetting where left!
Never assume, always check your work and if something is not right, follow up and resolve. Be proactive in the way you carry out your role.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help, if you do not understand a process, it is better to seek clarification than to continue with repeating the same error again.
Most importantly have fun in the day, enjoy your customers and your colleagues and in no time you will be closing the doors & donning your “Me Hat”

Missing tools and the world of a mobile business

Working as a professional trade’s person can be a difficult and time consuming job.
Your greatest asset is your time, investment you make per customer and the way you solve the problem for the customer, in such mobile times, there is no greater asset than having the ability to be mobile and secure with your resources, this results in greater awareness of who you are and thereby ensuring that you passed on to other potential customers. Simply word of mouth

Now a lot of the time, being mobile cannot be always achieved, due to the fact that in most cases, being in trades means that you have a small nucleus as a business and not much capital to invest in a office or warehouse.

You cannot be at two places at once, and priority will always go to the next customer. Not to the paperwork and deliveries that you have to receive.
Secondly you are outlaying an enormous amount of money on tools, and when you have several apprentices, that can become a very costly exercise.

Lastly your one greatest headache is tools, where to keep them and how secure can it be when you are leaving them locked in a Ute or van that is parked out the front of your house.
This can be a case of having one sleeping with one eye open.
Well have you ever thought about having a storage unit at an offsite secure facility?
This can solve a major number of issues.

- Firstly the fact that you can have all your expensive tools secured and locked away in a premises that is specifically designed with your concerns in mind. They are open seven days a week and in some cases have alarmed facilities which you can access afterhours.

- Forget about forking out thousands of dollars on duplicate tools, and tying up your cash flow to ensure that your apprentices have the equipment, why not allow them to share by putting it into a one centralised storage space. Then they can get the tools they need, when they need it.

- With the pin coded facilities, you can generate a pin number for each staff, so you can track who comes in and out of your space.

- With a centralised storage space, you will also achieve a work/ life balance, because you do not have all your equipment being cluttered at your house.

- No need to keep running back and forth between your house and the jobs for your items, you can just offload them in the space. Privacy and peace of mind.
- Do not worry about someone breaking into van or ute when you are away on holidays because again, it is securely locked in a space

- Secondly all those tiresome deliveries that you have wait around for, why wait when you have a storage space, most storage centres have a receipt and despatch facility, with forklifts, pallet jacks
- Why not use the networking opportunity to brand your business to a potential several hundred people in the storage facility when you come to access your space, who knows you may pick up the extra job here and there.
- You can even set up a wireless internet facility and a small desk to process your stock orders and despatch them out straight from the storage facility.

- What’s more you do not even have to worry about sorting through them because many of the storage facilities can provide you customised shelving solutions.

With many now facing the challenge of starting their own business in a tough environment, storage spaces offer, secure, accessible, pristine and affordable, can be a godsend. They enable trades business with limited space at home to get through the tough early days of a new business without the cost burden of premises to store their stock, papers or tools.

So have a think about storage as an option for your mobile business. It can be quite handy, and we can guarantee that your marriage will also improve!

International Women's day

On this international women’s day, it is a reminder of howwomen are life blood in the community. They do so with so much joy, commitmentand passion. They have carried the burdens of society throughout the ages withgrace, strength and a hell a lot of nagging. They have been known to stop warsand to start them as well. Thank you Helen of Troy. Everything from theburdens of child birth to mastering a family to running a business andexcelling in sport, they are men’s equal.

Anyway, enough of politics and life and let’s talk about ourstorage industry. Whilst you may think of the stereotype of a warehouse, andsweaty men all mingling about in their storage units with forklifts andtrucks chugging off diesel fumes, it is very much not the case. Believe it ornot, it is the ladies of this world who are our first points of contact and themajority of our customers. Whether it be enquiring about getting their houseorganised to preparing an office or a factory to be stored, it is the ladieswho get us disorganised men into the fray. They are the ones during the weekand the weekend, handling their young children and hauling cupboards and TVsout of their cars to put into storage.

They are also the mini warehouse managers of their owndominions of storage units who decide the fate of the contents in the storageunit and organise their way ward mulling about male partners into action.

It is quite inspiring to see the length and involvementwomen have to our industry and so at Storage King Chatswood, we stronglybelieve that it is our duty to be small part of their world and especially theday we pay tribute to women for all their contributions.

So on a cold Autumn day, Storage King Chatswood along withsome of our capable ladies customers and staff alike, all attended thecelebration breakfast held by the Concourse and the City of Willoughby. We felt that sponsoring and being part of such a special event for women,where we acknowledge their rightful place in this world, is one way ofacknowledging our valued customers in women.

ON THE MOVE!

Storage King Alexandria has expanded its product range. This increasedrange which now includes the Cube range of boxes particularly appeals tocommercial customers. One of the commercial businesses that purchases packingmaterial from Storage King Alexandria is the exclusive fashion company Sass& Bide. Recently we had a request from them for several Storage Kingbranded PortaRobes .

Being local the lady from Sass & Bide thought she would just popthem into the back of her small 2 door car. Of course when they wouldn’t fitthe team at Storage King Alexandria quickly utilised their free local deliveryoffer and had the PortaRobes there in a flash. These will shortly bewinging their way to London Fashion Week carrying the latest creations of thedesign team at Sass & Bide .

Yesterday, we had a young woman from the Netherlands wanting to take herpushbike home for sentimental reasons. Her Mum had given it to her. StorageKing Alexandria being close to both the airport and the city, helped her loadthe bike into one of the Storage King Bike Boxes we now stock. We even helped herpush it into the back of a taxi 2 hours before the plane departed.

Regional Ballarat: A Growth Corridor

Storage in Ballarat has changedover the last few years due to the significant growth in the area. The city hasnow become a place of real growth, located just far enough away frommetropolitan Melbourne to not be affected by the daily hustle and bustle, butalso close enough to commute easily enough for work – all the while stillretaining a bit of a “country feel” about it.

Alongwith a push for people from Melbourne to build and buy into more regionallocations, we’ve seen existing suburbs like Alfredton and Delacombe expandsignificantly, as well as other areas like Miners Rest and Mitchell Park alsoseeing growth in new houses. A brand new suburb named Lucas, is also nowundergoing development and is in the early stages of land release.

With these new developments, demand for housing in Ballarat has increased, andalong with it a significant demand on storage. More and more people are nowchoosing to put their goods into storage while building or shifting house thanpreviously ever did, as the housing and rental markets are currently quite indemand. The option for storage as a solution for the ordinary person has becomemore mainstream in the region as a result, and it’s no longer just something thatpeople in the bigger cities and businesses utilise. SIZE DOES MATTER!!!!

Trying to determine the size of a storage unit is not always about what you are storing but also about the flexibility of the space that’s needed. One of the questions I always ask people to think about is, do you need to move around in your unit? Or do you only want to rent enough space to cram everything in? If you are going interstate or overseas then obviously it’s not important to have room to move but if you are in between houses, need to declutter for sale or simply storing because you need more space, then you may want access to your papers, Christmas tree etc.

Having a plan before you move into storage can also be very useful on the day to help keep your stress levels down and to maximize the size of the space you are renting, think of it like a game of tetris (showing my age now) where you start at the back wall and slowly build up (most units are between 2-3 metres high) moving towards the front of the unit to make the most of the space and again if there are things that you know you will need access to over the time that you are storing, you may want to put those things right at the very front of your unit.

We've just received news that the XVenture Corporate Challenge Cairns 2011 will commence broadcast on ONE at 11am on Saturday 10^th December and run for 8 consecutive weeks until 28^th January 2011 in the same time slot.

The broadcast dates for Sky Business News are now being finalised and we expect to have these dates shortly.

Storage King is one of the teams in the inaugural XVenture Corporate Challenge. The competition puts corporate teams against one another to test the their physical capabilities and their ability to work as a team in a high pressured environment.

Ash's Organised Storage Tip

Someone once told me that one of the top five most stressful things that you will ever do in life is moving house, whether it is for good or for bad reasons. As a self-storage store manager I have seen the good, the bad, and the downright ugly when it comes to moving. Of all my years of experience, the biggest piece of advice I could give anyone who is embarking on this journey is to BE ORGANISED!

Whether you are doing the move yourself or arranging professional help, it is fundamentally important to take the time to plan and pack wisely. In turn this will save you the stress headaches and potentially a lot of your hard earned cash. If you arrange to pack your goods properly using all the correct packing materials and organise your transportation early, you will avoid the three biggest ‘FAILS’ in moving; broken/damaged goods, exorbitant transport costs and last but not least, a mammoth task of sorting and cleaning afterwards.

Moving house should be a positive experience, as change is the only constant in life. So remember BE SMART! BE ORGANISED!

The Value Of Space

A few months ago we were wanting to sell our home that we’d lived in for twenty years, a nice sea change we thought.

The idea of getting our home ready for viewing though was daunting. Twenty years of accumulating ‘things’ left us with a full house.

Our Real Estate Agent gave us some invaluable advice that I just had to share. He said, ”People are buying space, not belongings, they want to be able to visualize their own things in the home”.

He told us to de-clutter and simplify.

Feeling even more overwhelmed with the task ahead, I called my local storage facility. Within minutes of speaking with them I felt relieved and motivated.

This particular storage site had everything I required for a smooth transition, their expertise and experience was second to none.

I was supplied with boxes, packing tape, furniture blankets and bubble wrap. They even recommended a trusted Removalist for when we moved to our seashore home. I felt like our dearly loved belongings were in the hands of true professionals.

I must say, What a difference de-cluttering made. I loved this new look.

Our house sold quickly and the move went well.

Funnily enough, we decided to leave the majority of our ‘dearly loved’ things in storage and then have a garage sale at the end of the month.

This sea change was just what we needed, but what we love best is our newly acquired Space!

Rupe's Customer Service Advice

I entered the world of Storage King by default.

I was helping a previous employer (Peter Ward of Wendouree Wholesalers) working part time as the Customer Service Manager and also the delivery driver. I was solving clients needs and delivering what they needed. During this time my resume was submitted for a position with Storage King Wendouree. I had no idea what storage was let alone any thought I would be involved five years later.

Customer Service is the key. Listen to your clients. Find out what they are up to. Are they moving house, renovating or getting ready to sell their home? Are they using a removalist or moving themselves? These questions help me find solutions that suit the particular client I am talking to at the time. Everyone is different so each solution must be tailored to the individual with you, or on the phone with you.

Find out what your client needs and solve their problem. Just remember your client may not have any idea of how much is involved or what they are in for so be gentle, be firm but above all be helpful. They may not need or want your help today, however you can be assured they will come back if you look after them.

A New Look For Storage King

Recently we have updated our corporate website. The idea behind the change was to enhance our website so searching for your nearest store is easier, able to integrate with social media, increase the speed of the website and to modernise the look and feel.

Increasing the speed of the website
We've redesigned the website so the loading times are reduced which will help you view our website in areas where internet speeds aren't as quick. This especially applies to regional areas.
Store Searching
To make things easier to look for a store we have placed the search and browse functions to be central on the page. We've also changed the map and have implemented map buttons to specify the regions where we have stores to make the process of finding our stores easier.
Social Media Integration
Integrating our corporate website with social media buttons Facebook and Google+ has been a key to promote our band within these social media platforms. Google+ and Facebook gives you the option to recommend Storage King to your friends!
Modernising the Look and Feel
Our new website template has been designed to standardise our stores webpage which should make navigating our website easier. We've also touched up the paintwork and utilised our corporate colours in a larger capacity to make Storage King more identifiable.

This is just a taste of the changes which we have made. We hope you enjoy our new website and the changes we've made to make it easier for you to navigate around our new website.

My Stores Facebook Page

This is my first ever blog post for Storage King, actually, for anyone. My name is Jess from Storage King Melton. Our store manager Geoff and I created a Facebook page for Storage King Melton back in May 2010. As of today, we have 446 friends and counting. Most of these are actual Melton Regional Businesses. We have found that it is a fantastic way to promote and make announcements to our community at the click of a button.

Placing offers, uploading recent photos and articles can be a great way to notify your customers and potential customers of the goings on at your site. Although self storage is more of a “need” rather than a “want”, we have utilised Facebook to showcase what is happening at our store, rather than pushing it as a direct enquiry tool. It's a great way of letting your customer base know what's going on and a great way to build a network with our customers and businesses.

X-Venture Corporate Challenge

What an explosive five days Grant, Lorraine, Roy, Erin and I had in Tropical Cairns. Wearing the crown proud we flew north to represent the kingdom in a world series first. It was called the X-Venture Corporate Challenge. This saw us compete against 13 other big named companies like Pauls, Nivea & Quicksilver just to name a few. Over four consecutive days we tested our minds, bodies and team spirit in an amazing eight, not to mention very different challenges, whereby the winning team would get to present a cheque of $50,000 to Steve Waugh Foundation.

These challenges encompassed everything from physical ability to creativity, all under a high pressured environment, but more importantly were designed to test the strengths and weaknesses of teams. It was an experience of a lifetime and memories we'll all hold dear. Put aside the goal of winning, the lessons learnt from this wonderful journey, were ones we can take back and put into practice both professionally and personally.

The day has finally arrived and yes... WE ARE NOW OPEN!

We have stage 1 of our facility at Rocklea open and it is back to business. Our 6 bay packaging and box display in the office is organised to help our customers select the best packaging requirements to make the move easier.

We are so excited to have the latest technology installed, CCTV cameras with high zoom capabilities to capture number plates on arriving vehicles, pin code entry to individual units, along with 24hr security surveillance cameras. We now have a large range of unit sizes which are individually alarmed for customers piece of mind, our facility has automatic lighting control that will light the way to the customers unit, with easy access 24hrs a day 7 days a week.

We also have a forklift onsite with a registered driver for our receipt and dispatch customers, and 8 new trolleys available. Our goods hoist will also help our customers take their goods to the 1st level. Storage King Rocklea is on Fairfield Road and we look forward to helping customers with their storage needs.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR...time to de-clutter

It's Spring time again and this is the time which I look forward to the most... SPRING CLEANING or as others may say SPRING de-cluttering.

I begin at one end of the house and work my way through. My plan of attack is to have cardboard boxes on hand as it helps me realise that my house will look fantastic when it's de-cluttered and those items which I remove, I can still keep by utilising storage.

To start, my personal style is to empty each cupboard and by doing this, it creates a clean empty space to work with.

Next I sort through the items of what I no longer need or want and this is where I can utilise boxes and storage. My motto is “If I've not used it, touched it, worn it in 12 months but would like to keep it... then store It!”

My advice is have a plan of attack, great music on the stereo, a good week to go through each room and cupboard in the house, plenty of boxes and tape ready and if needed also a storage unit on hand as many people can’t part with their possessions straight away... and when I'm done, I relax by having a nice glass of red wine.

Boxes, tape and bags scattered everywhere, more mess than you can imagine but then the final product is rewarding.

Storage King lines up for Australia’s inaugural corporate challenge

Professional ironman Guy Leech and television business journalist Brooke Corte will host the inaugural adventure-based XVenture Corporate Challenge being staged in Tropical North Queensland in September.

XVenture Corporate Challenge Cairns is pitting teams from 14 companies against each other in a four day event. It will screen as a television series of eight one-hour episodes on free to air channel ONE and subscription TV’s Sky Business later this year.

Each participating company will be represented by a six member team comprising three men and three women. The corporate teams signed for the series include Bank of Queensland, Bupa, CPA Australia, FDC Construction & Fitout, Greater Western Sydney GIANTS, Hertz, NIVEA, PwC, Quicksilver Cruises, SIMS Metal Management, Storage King, Stryker and The Works.

Storing your Chritsmas and Seasonal Decorations

The stress and commotion of the Christmas season starts with a whirlwind, and usually ends with complete and utter exhaustion. Then comes the next step of packing it all up again.

Dismantling of the Christmas tree can be a traumatic affair. We tend to randomly stuff ornaments into cardboard boxes and shopping bags and then shove them into the backs of closets or attics. This can lead to damage and loss of items, and makes the decorating next year that much more difficult and time-consuming as you sift through the mess.

Here are the top 5 tips to making next Christmas less stressful

1. Christmas decorations and seasonal items are costly and we only use them once a year. In order to maintain and protect the quality and shape of your of these goods visit you local self storage facility, they usually have a range of packaging and storage boxes in many different sizes and styles.

2. When repacking your ornaments after use, do not remove the hooks you used to hang them. It will make hanging ornaments the following year much easier and limits the need for having that box of hooks that always ends up in a tangled mess. For more delicate ornaments, store the hook in the box but away from the ornament itself, to prevent scratching. Purchase storage boxes larger than what you need, to allow for new ornaments you acquire in the future. All loose ornaments should be individually wrapped in tissue paper or butchers papers. Bubble wrap can be used if necessary. Loose ornaments should be placed in a sturdy storage box, with shredded paper or Biofill foam to avoid breakages.

3. Label boxes on the top and front. Festive gift tags or labels can be used to make boxes instantly identifiable as Christmas decorations.

4. When storing Christmas lights it is always good to make sure that the wires and cables are not tangled. Using hard cardboard to wrap the lights around prior to storing them will make it easier next year to unravel and hang them.

5. Okay, so we all know what its like to work all day and come home in the evening to a house with washing piled up on the laundry floor, toys strewn from one end of the house to another, dishes in the sink that were not washed up after breakfast because you were running late, as usual! Then the kids are screaming at each other and refusing to do their homework!

You take a deep breath look around the room and notice that your once clean and tidy home that had a place for everything is filled with clutter and things you can’t even remember buying, draws overflowing and wardrobes bursting at the seams!

It’s time to ORGANISE YOUR HOME!!

Before you do this however you need to follow the 4 home organising rules, be prepared to be brutal.

Organise your belongings into the 3 categories

1. Rubbish

2. Put away

3. Put into storage

Rubbish includes any item that you do not need or want, but that is not donatable or sellable. Damaged and broken items should be included in the rubbish if they are not worth someone buying it and repairing it.

Put Away- This should be your smallest category. These are items that need to be out on a regular basis. Monitor yourself by determining if you have a place for each item. If the items in this box will not fit into your home without cluttering an area up, try to reassess if you really need them. If you do need these “essentials”, try to come up with a storage solution that fits into your home.

Storage- Put items in here that you cannot part with but do not need on a regular basis. Make an inventory of the items as you box them. Group similar items together! Remember one good way to clean out closets is to store out of season clothing.

Today’s blog is about storing goods in shipping containers.

On the weekend my husband and I had shipping container delivered to our farm to store unused furniture etc… to de-clutter our farm house.

Once the container was delivered my husband began making a roof over the container. I was baffled!

Why would we need to put a roof over the container made of steel? He said metal containers are not designed for long term storage! They designed for long haul shipping. When the container is closed its airtight. Temperatures rise rapidly inside. Goods stored in the container that are exposed to these temperature fluctuations will most likely be damaged, was the reply.

Did you know that most household and personal items that you store will contain moisture ie; linen, towels, clothes, shoes and furniture.
Matresses, for example, contain several litres of fluid absorbed from the bodies that slept on it, horrid thought I know!!
Even the air trapped inside a metal container contains water!!
Temperature fluctuations cause condensation that eventually drips onto the goods inside.

We decided on a storage container as our farm is a long way out of town. Putting a roofing cover over the top is the only way to be certain that our goods are not damaged by constant exposure to weather.

When considering what type of storage is best for you, I think it is very important to consider the ramifications of temperature. Self storage facilities are built specifically to store household goods in an environment that is not detrimental to the longevity of our goods.

One can only imagine how people have stuff stored in their self storage units! My Guess is that it is full of stuff piled up in no particular manner.

I read an article recently with some fabulous ideas on how to make your storage unit work for you all year round. The main idea was to make your Self Storage unit a seasonal storage unit. The one requirement for this idea though is a drive up unit, so some investigation may be required to see if your local facility has this option.

The best way you can do this, and with the least amount of effort and time is to store seasonal garden tools, such as leaf blowers and lawn mowers, etc… on a utility trailer. Investing in a utility trailer, and loading it with all the heavy, bulky garden tools etc.. that are not used for the duration of the season is well worth it. Sometimes there may even be room left on the trailer to add the seasonal clothes or decorations that are not needed and can be put in storage as well, like Christmas tree, pool equipment and toys, camping gear etc... Then simply roll the entire trailer into the storage unit and leave it there. Then bring it home at the beginning of the next season, roll all the items and other equipment off the trailer, then load all the past seasons equipment or other items on, and then drive the trailer back to the storage unit. With good planning, the whole changeover for the seasons can take an hour or less.

I am sure we are all for de clutter and seasonal de cluttering is a fabulous opportunity to use your home the way it is meant to be, that is no tripping over things and shoving things into every nook and cranny in your home.

If your unit is not a drive up unit you may need to re think the transport strategy. You may need to load and unload the items individually into your storage unit. It is still a great way to store goods and requires a visit to the storage unit only once per season. A lot of facilities have forklifts, trolleys etc. that can help with the moving of your items.

So seasonal use of your unit may be an option to consider and one very important piece of advice would be to ensure that any goods you do intend using throughout each season should be stored at the front of the unit and easily accessed.

If you are being forced to relocate to another part of the country, or even another part of your state, you may not be feeling very happy about your move right now. You might even feel like the bumper sticker that says, “Why does life keep teaching me lessons that I have no desire to learn?”

I don’t know why life teaches us lessons that we have no desire to learn. What I do know is that those times in life when we are faced with a hard lesson are the times when opportunity is always greatest. As Willa Cather said (somebody should make this into a bumper sticker too!), “Some things we learn best in calm, and some in storm.”

Put another way, when life gives us a chance to learn a lesson, we have the chance to open a present. We don’t know what may lie inside the wrapping paper. Does the package contain something exciting and wonderful? Or something boring and mundane? Or does it, perhaps, contain a book we’ve read before? Been there, done that, didn’t want to do it again.

The thing about this present, though, is that what it contains has not yet been decided. You are sitting there, with a present in your lap, and as you unwrap it, you get to decide what that package contains. That’s not the way opening presents normally works. But it is the way this present works. That’s what is so magical about a life change like relocation. It truly will be what you make of it.

So how do you change your outlook from self-pity to excitement and anticipation of good things to come? Try these strategies.

1. Change your self talk. Scientists are beginning to study the effect that the thoughts you have in your brain have on the rest of your body. Have you ever heard of the placebo effect in medical studies? Sometimes, when doctors tell patients they are being given a strong medicine, the effect of each patient’s faith in that strong medicine is so powerful that even the patients in the control group get better, or at least have significant improvement in their symptoms. (The control group in a medical study contains patients who aren’t really being given medicine but who are instead being given, for example, sugar pills, or the equivalent depending on the treatment that is being studied — so that doctors can see what the true effect of taking the medicine is compared to taking nothing.)

Placebo studies show us the power of thoughts in the brain to change actual, physical realities. You may be thinking that your job outlook does not depend on your thoughts. But, when your thoughts are positive, you behave different than you do when you have negative thoughts. You may see opportunities that you wouldn’t have noticed if you were walking around in a cloud of self pity. You may think more creatively about your options, finding opportunities to learn new things that will help you to advance in your career, or you may suddenly notice that you are moving to a city in which there are many businesses that fall into your industry, giving you the chance to move horizontally, to a similar job in a company with a different corporate culture, if that is what you are looking for.

2. Set goals. Once you have started to think about what a positive change your relocation will be, try getting more specific. Visualize where you want to be and what you want to be doing, at set mileposts that are still down the road. Think of what you would like to be doing in a year, and what steps you will have to take to get to that point. Don’t self-censor your dreams! You may think that your dream is unlikely to come true. That doesn’t matter. In the words of Robert Browning, “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what is heaven for?” Or, more prosaically, as Leo Burnett put it, “When you reach for the stars, you may not quite get one, but you won’t come up with a handful of mud either.”

Setting goals is a way of keeping your eye on the ball, so to speak. If your goal is to advance within your company, you will want to make sure to set yourself up to get the kind of experience that would be looked for by someone doing a job search for the position you are hoping to get. If you need additional education, you will need to find a way to make that happen. Start with your goal, work backward, and you will have a road map, or guide, telling you what steps to take at each stage of your journey.

3. Get more information. If your upcoming move is getting you down, it may be because you do not have enough information about the place where you are going. Getting information is a good way to put your worries to rest when positive thinking is not enough to dispel them. If there is some burning question on your mind that has you bothered, find out the answer. What are the schools like in the area? Is public transportation reliable? How are you going to keep in touch with the friends and family you are leaving behind?

One way to quickly change your own attitude about your move is to set aside your career for a moment and think about your personal interests. Do you have a particular church that you want to look for in your new neighborhood? Are there hobbies that you enjoy that you may find new chances to spend time, because of a neighborhood group or resources in a city that is different from the one where you used to live?

4. Find things that you can look forward to about the move itself. Do you love to travel by train? See if you can find a way to arrange your move so that you can go by train. If you are traveling across the country, think of it as a vacation — a road trip that you are taking for fun. Even if the move was imposed on you, nobody is stopping you from having fun with it. Be a tourist along the way. Stop at museums in strange cities, or go to see the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, or the Smoky Mountains. Take pictures. Collect postcards. Document your trip in a scrapbook. You may feel that this is the last thing you want to remember. But guess what? When you start to act as though it is an enjoyable even that you want to preserve for posterity, that’s what it will become — a special time to spend time with your family, get to know them better, and see a part of the country that you may never have seen before.

Finally, my last and, in my opinion, most profound suggestion and challenge to those facing a tough move: make a list of all the things that you hate about this relocation. Then turn each negative into a positive. Suppose that you are moving from the Southwest to the Midwest. Yes, you hate long drives, but you’ll get to stop in Chicago and visit the Field Museum. Yes, you dislike cold, icy winters, but you will love going to the lakefront in the summer. Yes, you got passed up for the promotion you wanted in your old department, but you are being given a chance to shine in front of a new group of people who don’t know anything about you except that you were handpicked to come and be with them. Be your own spin doctor, and before you know it, you will find yourself believing the spin — and really, truly making the best out of this move.

Well its a race that stops a nation. A Race Fit for Kings

All the Glitz and Glamour of the Melbourne Cup has passed for another year. A soggy year at that!!

Yes thats right! Die hard "Cuppers" were at the race in the pouring rain, it had been a week of wet, muddy conditions at Flemington. Hats and fascinators all dripping and wet, champagne bubbling in glasses, fashionistas all vying to be the best dressed and then the hopefuls all hoping that their horse would come in a winner. Some might have mortgaged their homes to place a bet, while others settled for the mystery trifecta at the TAB. All in all some winners and some losers, some people probably lost the shirt off their backs. I am sure of one thing (a little bit like lawyers), the book makers were the real winners on the day.

Cup favourite, So You Think, trained by the King of the Cup- Bart Cummings only managed to pull off third. Maluckyday gave all it had and made many one day per year betters happy with a second place. I am not sure about the saying that "on a rainy day back the grey" made many people happy as the grey "Linton" came second last, ouch!

The poor jockey on the cup winner Americain was fined $300 for blowing a kiss to the crowd before winning the race, not even a speck on his winnings and earnings for the day, I suspect! So we have another LEGEND in our midst.

Another cup gone by, a large number of people calling in sick today (self inflicted illness), and a few people crying in their coffee this morning over what could have been.

Even though it was Melbourne Cup Public Holiday many people called through to Storage King wondering if we were open. Like most Australians, Storage King Melbourne is not immune to the Cup Fever and our Melbourne stores were closed for the day. A day Fit For Kings - Storage Kings!!

Remember to sprinkle some naphthalene flakes among your books and clothing for long term storage
Always pack the items you may need at the front of a storage unit and the large items you will not require at the back
Do not store or wrap anything in plastic as this can cause humidity and mould
Pack heavy items and boxes on the bottom. Nothing should be placed on boxes marked fragile
Use good packing boxes as they are of uniform size, easier to stack and hold the weight
Use specialty designed boxes with foam inserts for frames
Wrap breakables in bubble wrap
Fridges, freezers and other white goods should be clean and dry before storing, with a deodoriser inside for freshness and the door left slightly ajar
Stoves and other cooking equipment should be cleaned thoroughly
Tools should always be cleaned before storage
Remove batteries from all toys and equipment as leaking batteries can cause permanent damage
Stack books flat - not on spines, in small cartons
Computers, televisions and stereos should be packed in its original packaging if available. Otherwise bubble wrap and good quality cartons will suffice. Fill the gaps with the wrap
Plates and crockery should be individually wrapped in white paper. Fill all gaps with scrunched paper and label fragile
Empty wardrobes and drawer units
Dissemble beds
Wrap furniture in blankets, not plastic
Vacuum and clean upholstery and rugs prior to storage
Wipe chrome and cast iron items with a cloth containing machine oil
Empty mowers and machinery of fuel and oil to avoid leakage and a fire hazard. Place on a piece of cardboard
Store records and CD's on their edge

The use of Packing accessories such as Cartons, Porta Robes, Paper, Tape, Bubble-wrap and Plastic covers will maintain and protect your goods whilst in storage. A variety of packing accessories is usually available for purchase at a Storage King Facility office. Fill cartons to capacity; partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse. Heavy items like books or tools should be packed in small cartons so they are easy to handle. Books should be packed flat, not on their spines. Packing and labelling cartons room by room makes the unpacking much easier, and if you need to find something in storage you will have some idea of which carton to begin looking in.

Make a research before you even start to pack boxes or plan for moving trucks to arrive at your home. Here are some important moving packing tips which can make your move easier & smoother and less painful process for you.

Have plenty of packing supplies before you start pack things yourself on your move. This seems like the simplest of packing & moving tips but is much more important than it seems at first glance.

Wrap items carefully using enough layer of wrapping sheets or old newspapers. You can use bubble wraps. After wrapping them, put them box. Do not fill box overweight. Fill empty space of the box with padding materials or waded newspapers which will avoid the risk of damage.
